IGCSE
At IGCSE level, students can study English at two different levels: as Second Language English or as First Language English. All IGCSE Level English courses follow the CAIE curricula.
Second Language English
Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language offers learners the opportunity to gain lifelong skills and knowledge including
- Better communicative ability in English
- Improved ability to understand English in a range of everyday situations and in a variety of social registers and styles
- Greater awareness of the nature of language and language-learning skills
- Wider international perspective
First Language English
The course allows learners to
- Develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
- Learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed. Learners are also encouraged to read widely, both for their own enjoyment and to further their awareness of the ways in which English can be used.
Cambridge IGCSE First Language English also develops more general analysis and communication skills such as synthesis, inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively.
AS and A Level
AS / A Level English follows the CAIE curriculum.
English Language learners develop an understanding and enjoyment of a wide variety of different texts, both written and spoken. They gain pleasure and awareness of how language works in different ways, for different purposes and for different audiences. In addition, they gain skills for life, including
- The ability to appreciate how different texts are shaped by their language and style
- Skills in creating their own imaginative and persuasive writing for different purposes and audiences
- Skills in researching, selecting and shaping information from different sources
- The ability to analyze and compare written and spoken texts in close detail
