Community Service

At MEF IS, learning is authentic, creative, and collaborative. MEF IS has an established record of service learning projects. Students learn ways to contribute positively to the lives of others in order to shape the world. Service-oriented activities have included helping at the MEF IS Forest, a tree planting initiative; volunteering at a local dog sanctuary; helping at a local retirement home, and bettering the lives of others via charity work and fundraisers.

Dedicated community service is expected of every high school student. The successful completion of these community service hours ensures that, during their time as members of the secondary school, every student participates in service activities.

In the IB Diploma Programme, CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is a requirement of the IB Diploma. Students balance their CAS experiences between three strands: creativity, activity and service by participating in activities in each of these three areas. Students thus participate in creative endeavors (‘C’), physical activities (‘A’), and service activities (‘S’). According to the IB, the purpose of the CAS programme is to develop strengths and weaknesses, build skills, learn how to plan, show determination, collaborate effectively, engage in global issues, and to consider ethics while making choices. Finally, in order to complete CAS requirements, students must complete an extended project of global scope that is typically based on providing a service.
